Gang Rape: IAUE Authorities Ban Inter-Sex Hostel Visits

The Management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni has directed the registrar of the school to issue a memo banning inter-sex visits in hostels in the school campus.

This came barely forty-eight hours after the school management handed over two male students who allegedly participated in the gang rape of a female student in hostel on October 13th, 2020.

A statement issued by the Vice Chancellor of the institution ,Professor Ozo Mekuri Ndemele,  last Saturday which was sighted by our reporter, indicate that inter-sex visits in hotel is to be prohibited any time of the day and any student found guilty of such visit put himself/herself and occupant(s) of such room at high risk.

In the meantime, the Management of the University has suspended three male students who allegedly gang raped their female colleague in the hostel.

The names of the suspended students were given as

(1) Nnamdi Destiny UE/2018 /Pol.Sc. /B.Sc/0062 – Pol. Sc.

(2) Ovunwo J. Henry. Yr. 1 – Sociology Dept.

(3) Samuel Valentine UE/2017/ Pol. Sc /B. Ed 4/0259.300 level – Pol Sc.

The statement read that the matter has been referred to the Students Disciplinary Committee to decide their fate while the room where the crime was committed has been sealed off and all occupants driven out of the hostel.

Meanwhile the Rivers State Police Command says it has commenced investigation into the alleged gang rape of a 100 level female student of the University by three male students of the institution.

Briefing newsmen in his office, the Spokesperson of the command SP Nnamdi Omoni said two suspects have been arrested in connection with the alleged crime while one is at large.

SP Omoni  said preliminary investigation indicates that is like there is a hostel in the institution known for the infamous act of rape and assault of women.

SP Omoni disclosed that the Police will work with the school authority to ensure the incident does not happen again.

The female survivor narrated that she followed one of the suspect Destiny Nnamdi Azuibike to charge her phone in hostel C room 20 and on getting there, they both agreed to have sex. She stated after Destiny left the room the second suspect came in and had sex forcefully with her. She said after the second person, the third suspect who is at large came inside and had sex with her forcefully.

Meanwhile Destiny Azuibike in his reaction said after they had sex he left to pick up something but on getting back to the room 20, the place was locked. He said he knocked and nobody answered, so he left the place.

The second suspect in his response said he walked into the room after Destiny left and pushed the female survivor and had sex with her.

Both suspects told newsmen that there is a hole in hostel C room 20 where they normally peep to watch fellow Students having sex.

The Vice Chancellor in a text message to our reporter said “We have arrested two of the suspects and handed them over to police. We are still searching for the third.

Meanwhile, the real occupants of the room have been sent out of the hostel”.
