NGO Inaugurates Good Governance Committee In Tai Communities

A non-governmental organization, Lifetime Caring International Foundation, has inaugurated Community Good Governance Committee in five Communities of Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The committees, which inauguration is part of the organization’s activities under the UNDEF Strengthening of Good Governance and Democratic Processes at Local Level in Nigeria Project, is saddled with the duty of promote civic education and encouraging community participation in the electoral and political process.

Executive Director at Lifetime Caring Foundation, ThankGod Kabari, who made the disclosure while inaugurating the Community Good Governance Committee, at Deeyor-Kira and Botem Communities of Tai Local Government area of Rivers State, noted with concern the alarming level of voter apathy due to the low level of civic education among community People.

Kabari said proper civic education will not only enhance more participation, but will also reduce the level of thuggery and political violence experienced in the civic space at the local community level.

He hinted that the project which is funded by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), has Women United for Economic Empowerment, a non-governmental organization as implementing partner. ‘Five communities including Botem, Deeyor-Kira, Kpite, Nonwa and Ueken have been selected for this phase of the project’, Kabari stated.

In their remark, the paramount of Deeyor-Kira community, Chief Charles Ndinee, and Chairman, Community Development Committee, Hon. Nyoryor Npie, said they are most grateful to the project team for considering the community in their choice of project implementation.

They narrated the ordeal of the community in the hands of political thugs during every general elections, and expressed hope that the implementation of the project will result in a new era of citizen’s participation in governance at the community level.

On his part, Prince Kobani Ndine, Paramount Ruler of Botem community commended the efforts of Lifetime Caring International Foundation for striving to ensure that the people in the rural communities, Botem especially benefit from the good governance process by making the community one of the few selected for the project implementation.

He promised to mobilise his people to be part of the project, to ensure the gap between the electorates and the elected is bridged.
