Petitioner Wants Those Responsible For Brother’s Death Prosecuted

A petitioner, Tambari Siraka, has said those responsible for the death of his elder brother should be prosecuted and face full extent of the law.

He told newsmen after appearing before the Judicial Commission of Inquiry that they should be prosecuted over the death of his older brother, Godwin Siraka, who allegedly died in police custody.

The petitioner said his older brother was arrested on September 22, 2013 by operatives of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and allegedly died on November 5, 2013.

He said his brother was arrested around Casablanca in Government Reservation Area, in Port-Harcourt on allegation of armed-robbery.

He said that the police had come forward and said he was dead in 2015, saying that the police said that he died in gun battle in a criminal hideout between police and armed robbers.

He however said he believed that his brother died in the custody of the police.

He told reporters that he asked the commission to order the police to release his body saying that he wants the officers involved to be prosecuted.

He also said the family wants thirty million naira (N30m) compensation, saying he left behind a wife and child.

Siraka said: “I’m also asking that the persons involved should be prosecuted and let them face the wrath of the law. Lastly, compensation should be paid because he has a wife and also a child. The child is about five”.

He said his brother was 33 when he was allegedly killed.

Under cross-examination he said his brother was arrested by an Inspector from Olu Obasanjo Police Station.

He was cross-examined by counsel to the Commissioner of Police.

The petitioner however said he did not witness the death of his brother.

Asked if he was not shot in gun battle between police and armed robbers, the petitioner said that he died under police custody.

He earlier adopted memorandum he sent to the commission.

He had also tendered documents which were admitted as evidence.

There was no re-examination by his counsel after the cross-examination.

The commission Chairman, Honourable Justice C.I. Uriri (retd), slated the matter for conference in which they will decide to make recommendations.
